Each image had a corresponding piece of text which gave a few clues to what you would find under that letter in the painting and how many there should be. In the X painting, there were only 30 words to find. Whereas, under the letter S there were 1,229 different words beginning with the letter S to find. There were a grand total of 7,777 words to find.

Also, in each painting, was an image of the author and a snail for those with keen eyes.

The book came with The Ultimate Alphabet Workbook which listed out all the objects you could find on each page, plus a few erroneous ones that didn't appear. Each correct entry was worth 1 point, and each incorrect entru deducted 2 points. If you completed the book with the highest points by 01 APRIL 1988 then you would win the prize of £10,000.

There is also The Annotated Ultimate Alphabet, which the Institute also owns, that gives the complete solution.
