Rules of Participation
Eligibility
Open to legal residents of the United Kingdom aged 18 or older.
The author, their family, agents, lawyers, and household members are not eligible.
Residents outside the United Kingdom may solve the clues but cannot collect the prize.
The Prize
The Bookhouse Institute periodically hides a prize at an undisclosed location within the United Kingdom.
A book containing clues is released. If you solve the clues, travel to the location, and are the first to find the prize, it is yours.
The prize includes contact details to notify The Bookhouse Institute that it has been found.
Treasure Locations
The Bookhouse Institute hides property in locations (“Locations”) that were legally accessible at the time of placement.
Participants are solely responsible for confirming current access rights and obtaining any required permissions.
Land status and access rights may change over time.
First Finder Rule
Multiple parties may search at the same time.
The first participant to legally obtain physical possession of the prize is considered the finder.
The Bookhouse Institute is not responsible for disputes between searchers.
Solutions
The official solution to each treasure hunt is recorded and held securely.
Solutions may be published in later editions of the relevant book once the prize has been claimed.
International Participants
International solvers may play, but participation is subject to laws in their home country.
The Bookhouse Institute is not responsible for customs, taxes, import/export restrictions, or other cross-border legal issues.
Taxes and Costs
All expenses, including taxes, related to receipt or use of the prize are the sole responsibility of the finder.
Waiver & Release of Liability
By participating in any The Bookhouse Institute treasure hunt, you agree to the following:
Voluntary Participation
You understand that participation is entirely voluntary and at your own risk.Assumption of Risk
Searching for prizes may involve travel, outdoor exploration, weather conditions, terrain, and interactions with others. You accept all such risks, including injury, illness, property damage, or financial loss.Conduct and Laws
You agree to obey all applicable laws and regulations at all times.
You must not trespass, dig, damage, or deface property.
You must respect the environment, avoid littering, and leave Locations in the same or better condition than you found them.
Responsibility for Costs
You are solely responsible for any costs related to your participation, including medical treatment, emergency services, or rescue.Release of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, you release and discharge The Bookhouse Institute, its organisers, contributors, affiliates, and any landowners from any liability for injury, loss, or damages arising from participation or from acceptance, use, or misuse of any prize.Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold The Bookhouse Institute harmless against any claims, damages, or costs (including legal fees) resulting from your participation.Negligence Carve-Out
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by The Bookhouse Institute’s negligence, fraud, or fraudulent misrepresentation.Governing Law
These treasure hunts and all related disputes are governed by the laws of the United Kingdom.
Any legal proceedings must be brought exclusively in UK courts.
You waive any objection to jurisdiction or venue of such courts.
